Four Things To Consider After Losing Your House Keys

Posted on: 12 February 2018

If you have lost the keys to your house, you may be wondering what to do next. First things first, you need to get yourself some new keys by hiring a locksmith. However, should this service also include replacing the locks? It doesn't always have to, but you need to consider some things first to ensure you and your family's safety. Here are four things to consider:

  1. How You Lost the Keys: Let's say your house keys were stolen. In this case, it's best to replace the locks. However, if you simply lost your keys, the chances of someone tracing those keys back to your house is unlikely. You also need to consider just how unlikely it might be. If your keys were attached to a keychain that had any kind of identifying feature, then you should probably change the locks. On top of this, if you lost your keys at work and don't have the most trustworthy of co-workers, then chances are they will be able to trace those keys back to your house if they wanted to.
  2. The Last Time You Had the Locks Changed: Sometimes things happen for a reason, and losing your house keys is a good moment to think about whether or not the locks should be changed. If it's been a long time and people have been given spare keys to help care for your house while you were away or you had someone living with you who had a key and still does but no longer lives there, then it just might be time to change the locks.
  3. Whether Or Not There are Spare Keys: Next, you need to think about whether or not you have any spare keys. If so, then you shouldn't worry too much about replacing the locks now unless there is a safety concern. Having spare keys means that you are still able to get into your house and it eliminates the high cost of both replacing the locks and getting a new set of spare keys to go with them.
  4. Affordability: If you are able to afford replacing the locks, then it might just be worth it at this point. However, if your budget is restricted, then you need to really consider whether or not it's worth it. The only time it really would be is if safety is a major concern. If not, then saving your money and simply getting a new key is best.
